Insecurities Are Not Real!!
Hi, this is Vaidotas, and I’d like to share another personal story. I believe it will inspire you to think about yourself in a new light. I often share this story during my talks with teenagers or at private corporate events. Yes, sometimes I’m invited not just to perform THE ROOP songs but also to give motivational talks on confidence, self-esteem, or the pursuit of happiness.
In my childhood, I was a very small boy. Even though I grew taller during adolescence, I remained thin, with long, slender fingers. I was often told I looked fragile, like I might break at any moment.
So I had a lot of insecurities about my hands. I even learned to hide them by clasping them in a way that concealed my fingers, just like in this photo. To this day, I sometimes revert to that habit.
After graduating from university, I moved to Vilnius. Some friends suggested I register with a casting agency. For those who don’t know, casting agencies are where filmmakers and advertisers look for people who fit specific roles. It’s like a database of diverse individuals. I agreed, thinking it could lead to extra income if someone chose me.
I arrived, filled out the form, and was called in for photos. I looked directly into the camera, turned to the side, and smiled. Done. But then, unexpectedly, they asked me to raise my hands so they could photograph both sides of them. I even broke out in a sweat because I felt deeply insecure. But I had no choice, so I did as they asked and then went home.
A week later, I got a call from the agency. They asked if I was free the next day to film a commercial. I said, “Tomorrow? Should I get a haircut or something?” They said no, that wasn’t necessary. “We need your hands. They’re beautiful and perfect for the ad.” What?! My hands are beautiful? They want to film them? I couldn’t believe it. But I agreed and showed up at the scheduled time.
The ad was for a mobile network operator. In the scene, a guy with ginger curls was doing something in his room, then picked up a phone and scrolled through it. However, his hands weren’t suitable for a close-up, so I wore his shirt and scrolled the phone with my fingers. That was it—my work was done. And I earned quite a decent amount—for my “ugly” hands! Wow.
After that, I got more calls. They needed hands for a watch commercial. Then for chocolate. Then for a beverage, a store, rings...
That’s when I realized that insecurities are not always real. Insecurities are often imposters, disconnected from reality. I had punished myself unnecessarily, not allowing my hands to “live fully.” What we see as unattractive might be beautiful to someone else.
Song Pick: “Multiply” – An Unexpected Duet with the Drummer
We had the chords and even a partial arrangement for the song, but the perfect melody eluded us. One day, our drummer Robertas sent us a demo file where he sang the melody himself. We listened and loved it! Together, we finalized the lyrics. When it came time to record, an idea struck Vaidotas: why not make it a duet with Robertas? Their voices blended beautifully. Initially, Robertas was shy, saying he could only record a demo, but he eventually embraced the idea.
We’ve performed “Multiply” live many times, with Robertas stepping out from behind his drum kit to the front of the stage with a drum pad, while Mantas joins us with his guitar. Standing side by side, we feel a profound connection.
The song’s music video includes behind-the-scenes footage from our concerts, tours, and travels. It reminds us how music invites us on journeys and fills our lives with color.
